The Royal Palace is located on the Dam Square, the place where it all began for Amsterdam. In the late 1200s the Amstel River was dammed and the old name Amstel-dam eventually morphed into the current name Amsterdam. The Dam Square is the core of the city with the War Memorial and the Royal Palace, surrounded by souvenir shops and a shopping district. 
The old city centre of Amsterdam with the Dam Square, Rokin and the Red Light District is the oldest part of the city. The oldest building is the Oude Kerk ( Old Church ) at the heart of the Red Light District, consecrated in 1306. Most historic buildings in the old city centre are houses, such as the very famous merchants houses lining all the canals.
