There are still many windmills  around Amsterdam, it's absolutely worth to visit the old factories and some of them are still working. In Zaanse Schans for example, you can have a look inside.

Still Working windmills, clog making demonstrations, museums, historic houses, cheese making and tourist shopping all in one historic park. Zaanse Schans is the first ever industrial park in the world that had over 1000 industrial windmills in its prime. You get to go inside different working windmills (mustard making, paint making, oil making and wood cutting) for 3 euros each windmill. They are run by volunteers who are dedicated to the perseverance of their culture and craft. Talk to them, they are very happy and proud of what they are doing and all full of very interesting and informative facts. The Euros go to help keep the windmills running and to help build future windmills in this area so see them all. The other windmills in the area that are not open to visitors grind cocoa, so the smell in the air is chocolaty good. I went to the Kinderdijk first to see the windmills, and in my opinion this was better and more informative.
