It opened in 1973, Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in the world. The collection contains more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 700 letters of the artist, given on permanent loan by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation.

Initially exhibited the museum almost exclusively from the collection of the Van Gogh family, which forms the core of the collection of the Van Gogh Museum. Over the years the collection has been expanded with many purchases, loans and donations. Developed a broad and targeted acquisition policy, the museum has in recent decades into a versatile 'Museum of the 19th century. "The public can get acquainted with the works of various trends and directions, such as the Barbizon School, Realism, Impressionism and the many styles that emerged at the end of the century. 

The 500 Japanese prints that Vincent and his brother Theo assembled, form part of the permanent collection, along with significant works by other 19th-century artists: contemporaries and friends of Van Gogh, including Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, but older artists whom he admired, such as Léon Lhermitte and Jean-François Millet. The permanent exhibition is on display in the main building, designed by the Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964). The exhibition wing opened in 1999, designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa (born 1934), houses the temporary exhibitions.
